The Canada that Liberals and Conservatives both promise to restore is not an imagined past. It existed. And it wasn’t built by any politician, it was built by working people who had organized enough power in their unions and co-operatives that the establishment had no choice but to respond.

Over the last four decades that power was taken back. The labour movement was eroded. The crown corporations that kept costs down for working families were sold off. The wealth working people created was concentrated into fewer and fewer hands, while both parties looked the other way, because the wealth that flows to the top buys campaigns, finances leadership races, and keeps a revolving door spinning between Parliament and the corporations it’s supposed to regulate.

No matter who working people send to Ottawa, Liberal or Conservative, that won’t change, not until we organize for it. Because until we build the kind of power the establishment has no choice but to answer to, our member of parliament will be just another cog in the same machine.

That is what we’re fighting to change. For the first time in forty years, New Democrats are fighting not to beg the establishment for crumbs, but to reshape the balance of power in this country, to put it back where it belongs.
